Breakfast With Santa

The story of "Breakfast with Santa" really begins in my childhood. I remember getting dressed up to have Breakfast with Santa at Boston Store. My mom and my aunt would take me and my sister and our cousins, what seemed like every year. So, naturally when we started to have kids we wondered where we would take them, as Boston Store's restaurant closed many years ago.

My cousin Tiff decided that they would do their own Breakfast with Santa at my Aunt's house...and so, another tradition was born.

This year my cousin Corrie took it over. My cousin's picturesque home was the back -drop to the much anticipated event. A fire crackled and the smell of eggs, doughnuts and coffee swirled in the air. And new this year...mimosas...yum!

They always eat breakfast and then a visitor always comes. There is almost always screaming when he arrives and this year there was jumping...actually a jumping line of small children followed the big guy in.

Most years there are tears (there is always going to be someone that is still a little scared) and there are always smiles. And we will always try to get an unsuccessful group photo, this year we tried with Santa and had disastrous results, somehow the timing collided with multiple meltdowns, which also brought lots of laughter from the adults.

We always sing Christmas carols and we always have fun.

Grieving With You

I had planned on posting our "Breakfast with Santa" day today...but today...it's not the day.

Lily's Christmas Concert was yesterday and she and Mason sang their little hearts out to songs like "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer"...all the parents clapped and took proud pictures and gave hugs to our kids for doing such a great job in their first Christmas Concert. They were unaware of what had happened. They were happy and silly, just as 4-year-olds should be.

I am so sad for the families of those lost in the Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy and for that entire school and community. It is a tragedy. Things will never be the same for them.

I cried at work a lot of yesterday, durng my lunch I listened to the president speak in my car and cried more, I cried when I got home and I continue to cry this morning.

I am so very sad that those parents will never see another Christmas Concert.

To that community I want to say that I am so sorry. So sorry.

Last night I brought Lily & Liam in bed with me to sleep. I didn't care that I was creating a bad habit, or that I should be trying to get Liam to sleep in his own crib without me...I just wanted to be close to them.

They are gifts. They make us see the world differently.

And yes, we all have "bad" days with our kids, but you never know when it will be your last day with them.

We will all do better at cherishing every moment with our own children, because of the children that were taken too soon in Connecticut.

Please know that the entire country is grieving with you and praying for you.
